Custom product page requirements and screenshot sizes

One custom product page needs screenshots in Apple’s required sizes for each device your app runs on, and may add up to three app previews per device size and promotional text of up to 170 characters, each per localization. Apple reviews every page before anyone can see it. Name, icon, subtitle, description and price stay as they are on your default page.

What screenshot sizes does a custom product page need?

The same sizes as your default page. Apple’s custom product page documentation points to its one screenshot specification, which takes one to ten screenshots per device size as JPEG or PNG with no transparency.12 The table lists every current iPhone and iPad size in portrait. Landscape is each size turned on its side: 2868 x 1320 for the 6.9-inch iPhone, for example.2

Apple also lists 4-inch and 3.5-inch iPhones, scaled from the next size up, and a new iPhone Duo tier at 2007 x 2853 (inner display) and 1398 x 2034 (outer display).2 The list changes with each autumn’s devices, so read it again before a large upload.

Which sizes are required?

For iPhone, Apple’s list of required sizes now names one screenshot for iPhone with Dynamic Island (medium display): the 6.3-inch size, 1206 x 2622 or 1179 x 2556.2 The same page still marks the 6.5-inch size as required when no 6.9-inch set is given, which is how the rule read until 2026. For iPad, one 13-inch screenshot is required if your app runs on iPad.2 Every other size is optional: when one is missing, App Store Connect scales the next size up.2

The set that satisfies both readings: a 6.9-inch set, a 6.3-inch set and, for an iPad app, a 13-inch set. For how a page is created and submitted, see the complete guide; for the API, see automating custom product pages.

What can an app preview be?

An optional video of 15 to 30 seconds, up to three per device size and language, as .mov, .m4v or .mp4 (H.264), at 30 frames a second and under 500 MB.3 Current iPhones take 886 x 1920 pixels in portrait or 1920 x 886 in landscape; the 13-inch iPad takes 1200 x 1600.3 The poster frame is taken at 5 seconds unless you choose another.3 Like a screenshot, a preview must accurately reflect the app’s core experience.5 Most pages do without one.

What are the rules for promotional text?

Up to 170 characters, optional, shown above your description.4 On the default page Apple lets you change it without submitting a new app version.4 On a custom product page the text is part of the page: a change is submitted with the page and goes live when the page is approved, with the same link.6 It is set per localization. One sentence that says what this page’s visitor gets is enough.

What does Apple review on a page?

Every custom product page goes through App Review before anyone can see it, with or without an app version in the same submission.7 A page cannot be edited while under review; withdrawing the submission unlocks it.7 Review holds the page’s screenshots, previews and promotional text to the metadata rules of the App Review Guidelines.1 Check these before you submit:

  1. The screenshots show the app in use.Not title art, a login screen or a mood board. A headline over a real screen is fine (guideline 2.3.3).
  2. No claim you cannot back up.“Sounds for sleep” says what the page is for. “Clinically proven” needs a study (2.3.7).
  3. No other app is named. Not in a headline, promotional text or keywords. Popular app names in metadata are a stated reason for rejection (2.3.7).
  4. The sizes match the specification. The same pixel sizes as your listing, no transparency, at most ten per device size.
  5. The keyword set is unique to this page.Apple asks that each keyword combination belong to a single product page.

What is the review guideline for screenshots?

Guideline 2.3.3: screenshots should show the app in use, not merely the title art, login page or splash screen, and may include text and image overlays.5 Guideline 2.3.7 covers the rest of a page’s metadata: no trademarked terms or popular app names packed in to game search, no references to other apps, no unverifiable claims.5 Section 2.3 opens with the test behind both: metadata, screenshots and previews included, must accurately reflect the app’s core experience and be kept up to date with new versions.5 After a redesign, a page still showing the old screens is out-of-date metadata.

Questions people ask

Do custom product pages need iPad screenshots?
If your app runs on iPad, yes. Apple points custom product pages to the same screenshot specification as the default page, and it requires at least one 13-inch iPad screenshot for an app that runs on iPad. Smaller iPad sizes are scaled from it.
Can a page have fewer screenshots than the default page?
Yes. Apple’s specification is one to ten per device size, and a custom product page’s screenshots are its own. Three to five that answer the search usually beat ten that tell the whole story.
Do pages need every localization?
No. Apple describes custom product pages as localizable and does not require every language. Its help does not say what a visitor in a language you left out sees, so add a localization for each language that matters to the page’s audience.
Can you reuse the default page’s screenshots?
Yes. When you create a page in App Store Connect you can start from a copy of an existing product page, which copies your primary localization’s screenshots, previews and promotional text, then change only what the page needs. Approved images in the Asset Library can be reused too.
